Happy New Year 2012!

Happy New Year for 2012! For me this year was about getting settled here in Macedonia, and getting used to a new routine.

After university I felt really overwhelmed, I wondered if I would ever have the commitment to work with the same dedication as I had for that final frantic year. It also showed me the importance of having balance in life, and hopefully I’ll never burn myself out like that again. Since then I had to slowly build up my confidence, learn new skills and really think about what I wanted. By the end of last year, I had finally regained my confidence, but what follows is a matter of hard work.

While I wasn’t able to accomplish every goal I set myself, I was able to prove to myself that I could work independently as an artist, full-time. At the end of the year, it’s time for me to think again about what I want from life, and set new challenges for myself. I hope all of you find the confidence to believe in yourself and strive towards your own goals.

Have a great year!

Happy Holidays

New artwork in my portfolio.

“This work was inspired the Japanese folktales of ghosts (yūrei), and in particular those of vengeful spirits (onryō).
These ghosts are inevitably female, defined by their distinctive white kimono, and long tangled black hair.
Although originating in the Edo period, the “Japanese ghost” continues to remain a staple of popular culture. While contemporary horror such The Ring and The Grudge has helped to popularize the stereotype in the West.”

This work took about a month and a half to complete.

Here’s a short look at the of making this work: Siren: Linework in Progress, and  Siren: Coloring in Progress.

If any of you have accounts and are interested in following me I do have an account on Deviantart under the name OrigamiCupcake, which includes a lot of my student work not featured on this site. It’s mostly traditional works like drawing, painting and sculpture.

For my final year piece in university I actually created the entire installation, above, out of sculptures and found objects. You can take a closer look on the Photosynth site, which joins multiple images together to create interactive panoramas. My installation, Revelations, had two parts; a black room and a white room. I hope you take a look ^^

I’d also be interested to know any reader’s Deviantart account details. Just leave me a message.

New artwork in my portfolio.

“In Japanese myth foxes who live long lives can acquire supernatural powers. Over time they grow extra tails, until they have nine.
These fox spirits are tricksters, who might pocess young women.
They also have the ability to appear human, and there are stories of men you have fallen in love and even married foxes only to realize later that they were deceived.”

You can see some close-ups and images of the work in progress on the same page.

This work took about a month and a half to complete.

New artwork in my portfolio. It’s an addition to my series Studio Shoot.

“ This series of work is set in a studio and shows a central character dressing up in various costumes. Unlike most cosplay which is a form of self-expression I wanted to make it clear that this was done for the camera. And that in turn it was for you: the ultimate viewer.
While most of the outfits in this series are modeled after specific characters, they are characters that fall into very specific types: the cat-girl, the nurse and the idol.”

You can see some close-ups and images of the work in progress on the same page.

This work took two weeks to complete.

Here’s an in depth look at the making of this work: Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4Day 5Day 6Day 7 and Day 8.

So it’s finally done. My new artwork Fairy Tale in my portfolio.

“Within anime and manga ‘platonic yuri’ is a genre of lesbian romance.
In this genre platonic affection and devotion between the lead female characters is as strong and deep as romantic love.
This ‘girl love’ is pre-sexual, innocent and chaste.”

You can see some close-ups and images of the work in progress on the same page.

This work took about two months to complete (yes it almost killed me).

Any comments are welcome.

It’s been almost two years since I first said “Nice to meet you” and started this blog. As I’m relaunching this site I think a little update is necessary about who I am and what this site is about.

When I started this blog I wanted to showcase the things that inspire me: art, design and Japan. This hasn’t changed, but now I feel comfortable to showcase my own work too in its own portfolio section.

My personal life has also changed. I was given the opportunity to leave the country and about a year ago left South Africa and moved to Macedonia (FYROM). It was  a decision I’m truly happy with, despite ups and downs along the way.

Thanks for the support. I hope you enjoy the new site and enjoy my work.

“This work is my interpretation of the quintessential oriental pin-up.
It was also an attempt at a simpler composition, reminiscent of traditional Japanese ukiyo-e.”
